Tiny Horses With Big Personality

While most people are familiar with dogs and cats visiting retirement communities, many are surprised to find out that miniature horses are now being trained as therapy and service companions. Research shows that with their gentle and affectionate nature, diminuitive size and good manners, they have an uncanny ability to connect with children and adults in a very special way. So it's no surprise that we all look forward to a visit from Bonnie Long and her two National Champion miniature horses, Tequilah Sunrise and Impressiable. Bonnie, a skilled rider, personally experienced their calming affect after losing two of her horses. It was through the suggestion of a friend that she looked into miniatures and became hooked. Bonnie's Angels, as the trio is called, are inseparable and regularly visit nursing homes and hospitals, bringing joy and plenty of smiles. We always look forward to their visits.

A Kind Heart

We have always taken great pride in the friendship bonds that form between our residents and staff. Nurse Sheneda is no exception, and is well-known in our community for her love, patience and compassion. But now she's also known for her generosity. Recognizing that our residents are big on Bingo, she surprised everyone with a generous donation. Now our game not only provides socialization but cash prizes! Thanks very much Sheneda!

Mother's Day Tea Party

We celebrated Mother's Day with entertainment by our old friend, Ray Heckman, who has performed for us many times. Ray's beautiful lyrical style on the saxophone was the perfect background for our tea as we nibbled on strawberry cake and cookies. Guests and residents were able to request favorite songs and each received a flower from the performer. We always look forward to Ray's next visit.

More Pet Love

We never tire of four-legged visitors, and this month we made a new friend. Clover's maiden visit was a crowd-pleaser and he was on perfect behavior. That's because his rescue sister Lucy, who is a veteran visitor, has probably taught him a thing or two. Lucy was certainly missed this month, but Clover certainly grabbed some hearts and rescue handler, Maria Gruber, reassured residents that Lucy will be back next month.

Stag Night

For our gentleman who are unable to venture out with the Romeo Club each month, we now have a monthly Stag Night for men only. We recently had our first gathering and it was a huge hit! One of the highlights for the evening each month is that the group chooses where they'd like to have dinner delivered from. White Castle made it to the top of the list this month. After their meal, the evening included good conversation, a little beer, some cards and Bengals checkers. Our gents are already eagerly looking forward to May's Stag Night.

Reds Opening Day Celebration

It's that time of year, so we were very excited to celebrate the Reds Opening Day and combine the festivities with our monthly Staff Appreciation event. To build anticipation for the day, residents were delighted to receive a small gift basket stocked with treats and delivered to their rooms. Our kickoff included a wonderful grill out, complete with hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, along with pretzels and cheese. It was a very enjoyable day and we are hoping the Reds have a terrific season. Go Reds!

Honey Makes a Sweet Visit

One of our frequent volunteers, Donna, entertains us by playing the piano in the evenings. Recently, she brought her fluffy and friendly companion Honey. It appears that Honey is now an expected regular and based on all the tail-wagging, it's difficult to tell who is enjoying the interaction more, Honey or our residents. She has a special way of putting a smile on everyone's face.

St. Patrick's Day with Frank Anthony

One of our favorite performers is Frank Anthony. The room is guaranteed to be packed because everyone enjoys hearing their favorite oldies and making special requests. He certainly didn't disappoint for his recent St. Patrick's Day show. We enjoyed Irish tunes with plenty of green snacks to complete the theme.

Mardi Gras at Nursing Center of Colerain

Since we couldn't visit New Orleans for Mardi Gras, we brought the festivities here! With special help from STNA Pam, we had a great time dancing, karaoke singing and playing Roll a Rainbow. Of course no Mardi Gras celebration would be complete without the traditional King Cake.

Owner and Mother

So you've entered a search in your browser for "Nursing homes near me", now what do you do? Picking out a nursing home for a loved one can be a mind boggling experience and many don't know where to begin. Experts say first impressions count and you need to look beyond the glossy literature. A community can only be as good as its administration, so how about talking to the facility's top executive? At Liberty Nursing Center of Colerain, we're proud to advertise that not only are we privately owned, but the owner's mother is here at our Colerain location. Meet owner, Linda Black-Kurek posing with her mother Marlene. Linda, also owner of 2 other nursing homes in Ohio, is often on site visiting Marlene. Why not come for a tour?
